History: The Mark Twain Democratic Club (MTDC) was founded in 1967 during the Vietnam War era. At the time, the La Mirada Democratic Club had endorsed the war amidst rising opposition in the Greater Whittier Area and across the country. J.C. and Loretta Amley left the La Mirada group to form a new club, named after a man who was the voice of reason during his time. This new club was staunchly opposed to the war and was established to uphold the core Democratic principles of truth, peace and justice. Nearly 40 years later, its members continue to work toward these same principles.

"Loyalty to the country always. Loyalty to the government when it deserves it."
"Each man must for himself alone decide what is right and what is wrong, which course is patriotic and which isn't."
"Look at you in war...There has never been a just one, never an honorable one, on the part of the instigator of the war."
